Why giving up seems easier

You get better at what you practice.

When you practice giving up, you get better at giving up. When you practice getting up, you get better at getting up.

Giving up is a skill. Getting up is a skill.

Which one do you want?

I understand why you sometimes want to give up.

  • Stopping bingeing feels so hard.
  • There’s conflicting advice all around.
  • There’s too much pressure to be thin.
  • Tempting food is everywhere.

I also understand why you want get up.

  • You know you’re too smart for this.
  • You know others have stopped bingeing and you wonder if you can, too.
  • You long for the day you make your own decisions around food.
  • You want to be free.

Giving up keeps you from your dreams. But you keep doing it.

So did I.

Why?

Because there’s a benefit to the quit. That moment of relief. In that moment, you can rest from the fear that you may never figure it out.

But here’s the thing: You’ll only never figure it out if you stop trying to figure it out.

You can do this.

You can figure this out one piece at a time.

Get up and find that piece. Then get up again and find the next one.

Piece after piece, you’ll get there.

It takes practice.

Commit to the practice of getting up.
