Who are you?

Who are you?

What are you capable of?

To answer those questions, I’m guessing that you’re going to look to your past.

Why?

Because you want to scan for evidence of what you’ve accomplished in the past. And what’s the problem with that? The past may not have the answer.

We’re so programmed to envision our future based on our past. But the past can’t tell you everything that you’re capable of because the future is unknown. When you look to your past, you may limit your potential to what you’ve achieved to date.

When clients first come to me, I ask whether they believe they’ll be able to stop bingeing. I often hear something like this: “I’d like to believe it. But, if I’m honest, I don’t.”

When they don’t believe it’s possible to stop, they feel hopeless, helpless, and powerless. And they usually binge to make those feelings go away.

Then they have more evidence that they can’t stop bingeing. And ’round they go again. “I’ve never been able to stop bingeing for long,” they tell me. “I’ve never been able to control myself around food,” they say. And I soooooo get it. I spent 30-plus years in the same spin.

But here’s the thing: You are not defined by the statements of your past. You are created by the questions of your future. What do you want your questions to be? Who do you want to become? What do you want to create?

If you want to do something you’ve never done before, you need to believe something you’ve never believed before.

What if you were open to believing that you could become someone no longer plagued by bingeing? How would you feel? What would you do? Who would you become?
